Conifer

Conifer encompasses a large expanse of rolling foothills and secluded mountain neighborhoods, southwest of Denver along Hwy 285. The town of Conifer itself can easily be missed as you’re driving by, as it mainly consists of a few shopping and retail centers just off the main exits. Although Conifer is anywhere between 35-50 minutes from downtown Denver or DTC, plenty of folks happily make the commute, and gladly trade convenience for seclusion and tranquility in the mountains. With more and more occupations allowing for full or partial remote working options, Conifer is becoming even more appealing and a realistic option for those seeking true mountain living.

What I find special about Conifer is it’s quick and easy access to some of the best outdoor areas in Denver, including Staunton State Park (Colorado’s newest State Park), as well as world class fly fishing in the South Platte and great rock climbing, hiking and mountain biking in every direction.

The housing in Conifer is predominately mountain homes with acreage. Many areas do not have covenants, or HOAs, and if they do they are typically not too restrictive. This is very appealing for those that want to build a custom mountain home from scratch or aren’t afraid to take an existing home and make it their own. As with any mountain homes, it’s important to have a Realtor that understands the due diligence process for septic, well and reviewing county plat maps and zoning, so you can feel confident prior to a purchase.

Want something fun to do with the whole family, book a zipline tour with Denver Adventures and experience some of the fastest and longest ziplines near Denver. And of course, in true Denver fashion, their office is adjoined to a great microbrewery called Colorado’s Best Beers, where you can celebrate after your successful day in the mountains. And if you’re looking for some great BBQ after a big adventure in the mountains, look no further than the unassuming Scooters Smokehouse and Grill. Their brisket and pulled pork will make you feel as though you’re in the heart of the South, even though you’re surrounded by the Rocky Mountains.

Even though Conifer is a little further away than some of the other mountain communities of Denver, you’ll find more opportunities here for buying a home with acreage, and less restrictions for what can be done on your property. And although Conifer has plenty of million dollar plus homes, you will also be able to choose from plenty of affordable options, including some fixer uppers for those that have renovation experience.
